On the 20th birthday of the successful program, global
education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced the
availability of new, interactive whiteboard lessons for its Every Day
Counts: Calendar Math program. These dynamic lessons add an entirely
new dimension to HMH’s popular program, enabling educators to further
transform the classroom experience for their students.
The interactive nature of these whiteboard lessons convert students from
passive to active learners, as they allow students to immerse themselves
in each lesson. Learners navigate the whiteboards simply by touching
different areas of the screen.
“Providing new and exciting ways to reach students is crucial for
success,” said Scott Bowker, General Manager of Specialized Curriculum
for HMH. “In addition to providing the best content, it is important for
any educational program to keep students engaged. These lessons do just
that.”
Every Day Counts: Calendar Math has been used successfully in
classrooms for 20 years in all 50 states. Now HMH is launching the next
generation of the program that fully aligns with the daily calendar
activities. Previously it had only been available in a print edition,
but these whiteboard lessons are bringing it into the classroom of the 21st
century.
Every Day Counts: Calendar Math has been accredited by SMART
Technologies for use with SMART Notebook™ collaborative learning
software – the world’s most widely used educational content creation
software. While the Every Day Counts: Calendar Math interactive
whiteboard activities were developed using SMART software, they are also
compatible with other types of interactive whiteboards.
“SMART accreditation of Every Day Counts: Calendar Math will make
the lesson activities more accessible in a growing number of classrooms
that have interactive whiteboards and for teachers and students who use
SMART Notebook software,” said David Lapides, SMART’s Director of
Education Policy and Practice. “These math lessons prepared in SMART
Notebook software allow for increased engagement, interaction and
enjoyment for the students, and we anticipate they will ultimately lead
to better learning outcomes.”
Aligned with NCTM Standards, Every Day Counts: Calendar Math
provides lessons and activities to preview, review, practice and discuss
critical math concepts and skills (such as time, money, estimation),
build math understanding, and raise test scores.
“The new K-5 Every Day Counts: Calendar Math interactive white
boards are an exciting new step for teachers and students,” said Patsy
Kanter, author of Every Day Counts: Calendar Math. “The
developers have worked conscientiously to maintain the original intent
and experience of the program, but now it is represented it in a way
that incorporates interactive technology. This new digital enhancement
makes the program easier for teachers to go in depth with their daily
math discussions, and children will be captivated by the technology
interface.”
