I lost my Ethernet connection

I was updating my Ubuntu 10.04, when I lost my Ethernet cable connection.

The only way I can connect again to the Internet is by using the "Recovery Mode" then "netroot: Drop to root shell prompt with networking" and then using Lynx or Links2, two text browsers.

If I start to Gnome, I cannot connect.

This is what I have tried:

1)- http://209.85.195.104 (Google) : server not found. Not a DNS problem.

2)- Recovery Mode run:Repair broken pakages: the system was updated in a root shell but could not connect when reboot to Gnome.

3)- In Startup Programs Network Manager Command: nm-applet --sm-disable is what I have.

4)- In a terminal I write: nm-applet and I get: An instance of nm-applet is already running.

5)- In Network Proxy Preferences I have Direct internet connection

6)- In Devices Network Tools Ethernet Interface (eth0) IP information Netmask: 0 IPv4: 0.0.0.0

Where is the next place I can look ?

Thanks Mike.

I have done that before, no result.
I am using Puppy Linux in another disk partition and works perfectly.

Shut down everything including router, power off.

Bring/Power up the cable modem and wait for its lights to get
established. Presuming there is a separate router/NAT device, power it
up and wait for its lights to all be good.

Then power up the computer with the disabled Ub partition and see if it
gets an IP address.
