Database provider Ingres has announced that the Ingres VectorWise for Linux is available, with this being a new generation database offering impressive performance improvement.

Ingres VectorWise logoThe database world was shaken with Oracle’s purchase of Sun Microsystems, adding the open source MySQL database to their own proprietary databases, provoking outcries that the approval of this purchase will signal the end of MySQL in the future.

Among the other players who offer open source products is Ingres, who has announced their new generation database: Ingres VectorWise for Linux, which promises better performance than the current generation of products, notably for large and very large volumes of information.

Intel has played a large role in its development so that they can adapt their server processors to meet the exigent data analysis needs required to be able to analyse the millions of lines of information.

Ingres also pushes the fact that their Ingres VectorWise for Linux doesn’t require a powerful hardware configuration or any special data preparation, translating into cost reductions for enterprises.

Significantly improved performance

"The ability to handle unprecedented amounts of data on simple commodity hardware will open up a raft of new possibilities for Analytic Applications that will deliver a competitive edge to our partners and customers",
states Roger Burkhardt, CEO of Ingres.

Numerous companies have tested the Ingres VectorWise solution through a beta program, with very large volumes of data. They have reported performance improvements ranging from 10 to 70 times faster when compared to the standard solution, with requests coming back in a matter of seconds compared to minutes before.

This improved performance can be explained by the optimisations made to hardware and the integration of technologies like data arranged in columns (HadoopDB) and vector processing.

The new generation Ingres VectorWise database for Linux can be directly downloaded as an evaluation version from the editor’s site, while an enterprise version with technical support also exists (commercial version).
