DHCP is a protocol that allows a computer that is connected to a network to automatically obtain its TCP/IP configuration. The object of DHCP is to simplify the configuration of the computers connected to the network.

Implementation

To start with, you will need to create a scope that will contain a range of available IP addresses that can be distributed to the computers on the network. To do this, go to the Administration console of the DHCP server, select your server and then click on Actions and New Scope.

Click on the next button and the assistant will ask you to enter a name and description that you can use to recognize your scope. Click on the next button and the following window will appear:

This is where you will need to enter the range of IP addresses. To do this, you need to enter the starting and ending numbers as well as the corresponding subnet mask.

If you need, your scope can contain one (or more) exclusion zones which will leave the IP addresses to the side to never be given to clients. These can be left aside for printers or servers for example. In this example, the addresses between 192.168.0.50 and 192.168.0.60 inclusive are part of the exclusion range.

Besides this, you will need to define a lease time. As a reminder, an IP lease time is the duration that your client can keep its DHCP designated addresses.

Once the lease time has been defined, the assistant will ask you to define the following advanced options:
