Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ:INTU) today
issued the following statement regarding two bills before Congress,
known as the Protect IP Act, or PIPA, in the Senate and the Stop Online
Piracy Act, or SOPA, in the House.
Intuit has not previously taken a public position on SOPA or PIPA.
However, Intuit believes user-generated content is a critical component
of Internet freedom and the ability for innovation to thrive in the
digital economy. Any legislation to combat software and content piracy
and counterfeiting, which are also important, must carefully avoid
unintended adverse consequences for user-generated content and other
critical Internet policy issues. Intuit is concerned that the primary
legislation currently in the Senate and House do not ensure this
balanced outcome. We appreciate the willingness of the legislative
sponsors to engage in a dialogue about their bills, and hope this will
lead to balanced legislation. Today's copyright and content industries
and evolving online hosting platforms are both critical to drive
continued innovation in the American and other economies across the
world.
