ITT Exelis (NYSE: XLS) has been awarded a $33 million Foreign Military
Sales (FMS) contract to provide the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence
with the latest Generation 3 night vision technology.
Under this FMS order, the U.K. MoD will receive the Head Mounted Night
Vision System (HMNVS), a variant of the U.S. military AN/PVS-14
monocular. Deliveries are expected to begin in the second quarter of
2012 and be completed by 2016 in accordance with a phased delivery plan.
“We are excited to provide our Generation 3 Pinnacle product to the UK
MoD, a strong international ally, in support of its force modernization
initiatives,” said Nick Bobay, vice president and general manager of the
ITT Exelis night vision business area. “Our team is dedicated to
providing the world’s finest Night Vision capability to the US
Department of Defense and our international allies.”
The U.K. MoD’s HMNVS will have enhanced resolution for target
recognition and identification from an auto-gated image intensifier tube
(I²) with a higher figure of merit. The figure of merit is used to
specify maximum tube performance for export purposes. An auto-gated I²
tube helps protect the tube during use in high light condition and
provides a clearer output when adverse operational conditions such as
dust or fog arise. This technology provides soldiers in training and
combat, an unprecedented “own the night” capability-- the tactical
advantage that ensures mission success.
