Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPod and iPad: Greenpois0n available

October 12th, 2010 - 11:35 am ET by C. D.

Released slightly later than initially planned due to Limera1n stealing its thunder, Chronic Dev Team’s jailbreak solution has now been made available.

Greenpoison logoThe Chronic Dev Team was supposed to launch their Greenpois0n jailbreak tool on the symbolic date of 10/10/10, at 10:10 am and 10s, but another developer – the now famous Geohot, instead decided to release his own solution, Limera1n, a few hours before.

In addition to getting beaten out just a few hours before their release, a "problem" also appeared: Limera1n used a different fault in iOS than that used by Dev Team. To not uncover two faults at the same time, it was decided that the launch of Greenpois0n would be postponed while it was adapted to use the same security fault exploited by Geohot rather than their own access method (the SHAtter fault).

Greenpois0n: the same fault as that exploited in Limera1n

The Dev Team will then be able to pull out this additional fault once Apple has corrected that used by Limera1n. Despite this, they have nevertheless released their own Greenpois0n tool, using the same resource to jailbreak Apple handsets, with the advantage of also offering a Mac version ( still not available, though ) in addition to Windows, something which wasn’t available with Limera1n.

Greenpois0n unblocks the following handsets:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod Touch 3G et 4G
  • iPad

It also provides access to alternative download portals like Cydia Store
