Jolicloud: the cloud computing operating system

This article is aimed at netbook users in particular, but is also of interest to all users who spend a lot of time surfing online services, social networks, picture sharing sites and performing office tasks… JoliCloud is a "Cloud computing" operating system. It will allow you to fully benefit from online applications like Gmail, FaceBook, Twitter, Skype, YouTube and Pandora, in addition to numerous other free and open applications (OpenOffice.org, Transmission, VLC, Office Live and Gimp which can be installed with a click). Similar to the future Google Chrome OS, it is light and rapid and requires no powerful hardware configuration. Jolicloud can also be installed by itself on your PC/MAC, as a dual system with other OS’s (dual boot) or launched from a memory stick.

A very useful graphical interface: the Dashboard
Once the system is launched you will see the "Dashboard" presented in HTML 5. It groups together a few web applications to get you started. The possibility of changing the screen background is very simple, with this being done by simply entering the URL where your files are stored. Like with Android OS, the points at the bottom of the page allow you to swap between other application pages (one point = one page). The synchronisation and application updates are automatic as you can see in the screen capture below.

Search for and install apps: App Centre
There are various ways to install applications. You can freely search via the field present in each of the "Search for apps and friends" window, with this being the most direct method if you know what you are looking for. Alternatively, you can click on the "+" icon and access the App Centre library. It’s difficult to make things any simpler. On one side you will see the "individual Apps" while on the other side you will see everything classified by Categories (All apps, Add-ons, Office, Storage, Video, Graphics, Games).

Access your files and make friends: Universal Folders and Social Stream
With Jolicloud on a netbook you can exploit all possible web applications without ever storing anything on your local drives thanks to Box.net, Dropbox, ZumoDrive... It is possible to store personal information and multimedia content on your hard drive via the "Universal Folders" tab and Folders or Drives (for external drives). The "Social Stream" panel will allow you to join the existing user community or find your friends.
