Completing Windows XP, Vista or 7’s security with MSE antivirus
Microsoft Security Essentials is Microsoft’s free antivirus solution made available to all holders of a valid Windows XP, Vista or Seven license, with versions being available for both 32 and 64 bit systems. In addition to the integrated firewall, this successor to Windows Live OneCare reinforces the systems overall security, delivering protection against viruses, spyware, root kits, Trojan horses and other unidentified viruses.
An antivirus like any other?
The antivirus includes the majority of the functions available in competing products, both free and commercial. What does this mean? Real time protection, a definition database containing viruses and spyware, automatic updates, different scan types (quick, full, custom), a quarantine and behaviour learning, scheduled scanning and other useful settings which we will look at.
Once installed, Windows Defender is disabled and replaced by the more complete MSE…
The installation of Microsoft Security Essentials begins once Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) has verified that your copy of Windows is legitimate. If Windows Defender is active on your machine then it will be disabled. Microsoft Defender actually becomes obsolete as Microsoft Security Essentials includes the same anti-spyware, although with more services. A lot of users complain that the update doesn’t always work though (error code 0x8*******). In addition to presenting this product and its features, we will also show you how you can manually update the virus definitions if required.
