Use the No to All option when you copy/paste files

May 10th, 2003 - 06:00 pm ET by R. K.

When you want to copy or move file from Folder A (source) and place them in Folder B (destination) and this folder already contains some files that have the same name as those in folder A, a message will pop up informing you that a file with the same name already exists and do you want to replace it. Four options will then be offered to you, as shown in the below capture:

These four options will perform the following tasks:

  • Yes: this will allow you to replace only the file in question.
  • All: This will allow you to replace all of the files that have the same name.
  • No: This will keep the file that is already on the system.
  • Cancel: You can cancel the copy or move process.

As you can see, the “No to All” option is not present. This option allows you to conserve all the files that have the same name without having to say so each time. Of course if you copy or move a very small number of files and you want to keep the files in the destination folder (Folder B) then you can simply click No when ever there is a conflicting file. But if there are a lot of conflicting files in the folder then this tip will allow you to copy only the new files in a quick way.

So how can we use this option? Very simple and no need to change anything in the system, you just need to hold down the Shift key when clicking on No and you will have the same results as “No for all”.
