Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that its
automotive speech technology powers the voice recognition and
text-to-speech features of the OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle) retail
rearview mirror. FMV brings OnStar’s powerful and comprehensive
in-vehicle safety, security and communication service already
experienced by 6 million active customers to more than 90 million
vehicles on the road.
Nuance’s innovative combination of embedded and connected voice
technology enables FMV drivers to just press a button and speak with
natural language commands to engage both on-device and connected
services. Drivers can make calls, update contact lists, and get
turn-by-turn directions, which are read aloud with Nuance’s
text-to-speech technology.
“Mobile consumers thrive on connectivity, so providing access to key
features and services while minimizing distractions is paramount,” said
Michael Thompson, senior vice president and general manager, Nuance
Mobile. “OnStar’s FMV brings voice-enabled in-car communications to a
wide array of car makes and models, giving drivers even more options for
staying connected in a safer, smarter way that keeps two hands on the
wheel, and two eyes on the road.”
Availability
OnStar FMV will be available later this summer at all Best Buy stores,
OnStar’s first strategic retail partner -– with onsite installation -–
and at other consumer electronics retailers. OnStar FMV will carry a
suggested retail price of $299. Installation, which consists of
replacing the existing rearview mirror with OnStar FMV, is expected to
take less than an hour and cost no more than $100 in most vehicles. A
range of service plans will be available for OnStar FMV, starting at
$18.95 a month or $199 a year.
