A red alert has been raised about the latest NVIDIA GeForce 196.75 drivers which seem to suffer from a major problem when managing the speed of the ventilation fan. This may lead to fatal over heating of the device.

Logo nVIDIA ProAt the beginning of the week, NVIDIA delivered their latest WHQL certified GeForce drivers. The 196.75 engine is aimed at systems with the Windows XP, Vista and 7 operating systems, although on NVIDIA forums notably, users have started to complain about the drivers.

Numerous users have noted that their hardware increases in temperature to serious levels which can be fatal to their GPU. In the same forums, a member of NVIDIA technical support yesterday indicated that following these reports linked to management problems of the fans speed, the 196.75 drivers were temporarily removed from the official site.

NVIDIA will take a serious look at the problem to work out whether there really is a problem, and to then identify any eventual cause. For the time being, it is recommended that users return to drivers marked 196.21. This may mean rolling back for some users who had already passed to drivers marked 196.75, while for others this means that updates should be avoided.

The NVIDIA GeForce/ION 196.21 drivers:

  • Windows XP : 32 bits ; 64 bits
  • Windows Vista / 7 : 32 bits ; 64 bits
