Office
Children between the ages of 7 and 12 now have an office suite adapted to their level of knowledge and needs. OOo4Kids is an open source project based on the well known OpenOffice.org. Containing a word processor, spreadsheets, design tool and Impress software, the package have everything present to allow younger users to express their creativity; but will this be enough to overcome the technical aspects? This is what we will be looking at in this article!
The office suite for 7 to 12 year olds
OOo4Kids is an office suite dedicated to children between the ages of 7 and 12. This is an office suite based on the same source code used in OpenOffice.org created and managed by EducOOo, with the Core Team being made up of ten members. Contributions from the user community are more then welcome in regards to testing, illustrations and source code, etc.
What is included in the OOo4Kids package?
The office suite integrates five familiar applications which have been simplified, with OOo4Kids Writer being the word processor, OOo4Kids Calc used for spreadsheets, OOo4Kids Draw used for drawings, OOo4Kids Impress is used for presentations and OOo4Kids Math used for mathematic calculations. We will see what changes have been made to these products when compared to the standard OpenOffice.org product.
Multi-Lingual and Multi-Platform
OOo4Kids is available for download in version 0.6. In addition to English, four other languages are available: German, Spanish, French and Italian. The office suite is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, Seven, Mac OS X (Intel or PPC) and Unix/Linux (in 32 or 64 bits).
