Opera Software has released the final version of their Internet Opera 10.60 suite.
The new Opera browser engine has for once the same version number – 10.60 for all supported platforms. Compared to the previous version 10.5x, the performance improvements are announced in the order of 50%. Opera Software refers to the various tests conducted, mainly on the JavaScript SunSpider (Webkit) benchmark where Opera 10.60 came in ahead of all competing programs including the current Google Chrome 6.0 development version.
We have already listed the new features in Opera 10.60 when the public beta version was released. As a reminder, HTML5 is now handled by Appcache and Web Workers for the retrospective use of Web applications in offline mode and the execution of complex calculations on the client side (in a JavaScript thread) without slowing the browsing down. Localisation can either be authorised or disabled, while the WebM multimedia format is also supported.
Improvements have been made to the bowsers look with an O button replacing the traditional menu, while other changes have been made to look of Speed Dial and tabs previewing with fluid transitions between each thumbnail.
In the search field, the search suggestions are available for Wikipedia among others, while a new entrant has also appeared: Microsoft Bing can now be found with Google which nevertheless remains the default choice.
In terms of security, Opera Software has signed a partnership with AVG to offer anti-fraud systems and phishing protection.
According to Opera Software, these Web browsing solutions are used by 120 million active users. These figures also take into account all mobile users. In April 2010 (100 million users), the proportion between desktop and mobile uses was 50-50.
