EasyNote Butterfly xs, a netbook not like the others?
Since September 2007, Packard Bell has been a business unit within Acer. The EasyNote Butterfly xs is a general public netbook which comes in either red or black, the development of which came about through the merger of the two companies, with it being aimed at mobile users. What makes this device stand apart isn’t specifically its brilliant 11.6 inch screen and the definition of its 1 366 x 768 pixels (WXGA) screen. It really is its low voltage processor (CULV), an Intel Celeron SU2300 (double core) with an announced battery life of 8 hours and the presence of an internal DVD burner. It shouldn’t be forgotten that "classic netbooks" come without an optical drive. Due to this, users generally find themselves without this option which means that the installation of the operating system has to be done from a memory stick, external DVD drive or part of the hard drive has to be allocated to the installation files. Windows 7 is already pre-installed on this device, but the user can test any other OS that they like (Linux distributions for example) and take advantage of all of the possibilities provided by having a Super Multi DL DVD burner (burn data disks, play DVD video …). Instead of taking up 12GB of your hard drive for the system restore files, this space can be freed up to the benefit of the user, with the creation of a restore DVD instead being done with the help of the included "Master DVD Creator" utility.
The netbooks main characteristics
The Intel Celeron SU2300 processor running at 1.2 GHz is paired with 3GB of memory (2 GB Samsung + 1 GB Elpida DDR2), a 320 GB hard drive, Intel 4500 MHD graphics chipset and a HDMI output which we will test by trying to play HD video content (720p and 1080p). The rest of the connectivity options are good, with the device coming with an integrated webcam, VGA port, USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n wireless and a 5 in 1 memory card reader. This netbook comes with the 64 bit version of Windows Seven Home Premium edition pre-installed, and has been available since February 2010 with a starting price of $700. In out test we will run the standard benchmarking tests over it: PCMARK Vantage, HD Tune Pro 4.01, 3DMark Vantage with the Performance resolution setting (1 280 x 1 024) and Extreme resolution setting (full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels) to be able to see the difference.
