Piriform: free software for cleaning and optimising Windows

Piriform is a development company founded in 2004 in London. This software editor specialises in free user utilities. Still don’t know anything about them? Not even their pear logo? (Piriform means "pear shaped")? This is highly unlikely… as the company has, in just a few years, developed four well known applications available on the internet - CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva and Speccy, with most users having installed at least one of these on their Windows machine. In this article we will present Piriform’s applications, with these providing information about your installed peripherals, clean Windows and its applications, optimise your hard drive and recover accidently erased data.

sp_64Everything you want to know about devices and your Windows configuration
Speccy is a tool which displays information about your Windows equipped computer. It provides information about all of the components in your machine, information about the OS version, the processor, hard drive, optical drive, motherboard, RAM, video card, network card, keyboard and mouse. In a few seconds you will know everything there is to know about your hardware.

This information base makes updates easier
What can you do with all of the information presented in the contextual window? If you are the administrator of a network of Windows computers which need updating, this could be of use. If you are a home user and want to know, for example, details about your motherboard manufacturer, the BIOS version, the CPU or GPU temperature, the driver version used by peripherals (video card, network card, audio drivers) and important information about the RAM (number of memory slots available, size, frequency, CAS#...), then all of this is available to you. You will then simply have to visit the manufacturer’s website to get the latest drivers.

Export and exploit this information
All of the information contained here can be exported to an INI file (View, Options, Advanced, Backup all settings to an INI file) which can then be found in "C:\Program Files\Speccy". It is also possible to take a "snapshot" of the machine in the "PC Name.speccy" format via the File, Save instant snapshot menu. Finally, you can simply export all in the XML or TXT format (File, Save in XML or Save in text format) or decide to even print this to paper.
