PlayOnLinux - PlayOnMac: use Windows programs under Linux / MacOS

PlayOnLinux and PlayOnMac are two free programs which allow you to fully benefit from Wine, even if you don’t have a solid technical background. These two applications, relatively simple to use, will allow you to install or run any program (office, game, graphics editor, and development tools) initially designed for Windows, from your GNU/Linux distribution or your MAC. The "PlayOnLinux or PlayOnMac" releases are essentially programs which delight gamers who don’t want to purchase a Windows license but are still able to play the latest games, without having to change their user habits.

Installing PlayOnLinux
We will start on an Ubuntu installation. Firstly, you will need to look for and install the packet that corresponds to your distribution. You can either do this by using the Synaptics packet manager or by entering the keyword "playonlinux" into the search space followed by "Apply". You can also do this via the drop down menu, Applications, and Ubuntu Library, or you can finally visit the Playonlinux site and directly download the packets. Once installed, the program is available in the Ubuntu Games and PlayOnLinux menu.

Installing and running an officially supported application
The PlayOnLinux welcome window is ready for use, and initially there is no reason for you to complicate matters. Click on the "Install" button and you will see a diverse range of application categories (Accessories, Development, Education, Games, Graphics, Internet, Multimedia, Office, Other). In these program categories you will find supported programs listed and there is a very good chance that you will find what you are looking for.

A practical example – installing iTunes 10 on Ubuntu
As an example of the process to follow we will install iTunes 10. Click on the Install button and then go into Multimedia, iTunes 10 and click on “Apply”. You then simply need to follow the installation instructions. You can also download "iTunesSetup.exe" yourself from Apple’s site and indicate its location in PlayOnLinux.

The installation is very straight forward!
Indicate the location of the iTunes executable file (32 or 64 bits). You will then see the iTunes + QuickTime installation program start and you simply need to read the softwares user conditions, accept them and configure the audio player. At the end of the operation, you will be able to create desktop and applications shortcuts by checking the corresponding boxes. The PlayOnLinux window will now be integrated into the iTunes10 program, with the software being released in both a Windows and Mac version. Since PlayOnLinux works in partnership with Wine, all of your installed programs will be visible, configurable and executable from Applications, Wine and Programs.
