Presentation on the openSuSE distribution

In this article dedicated to openSUSE we will be firstly presenting SuSE Linux and then the different functions that are offered by openSuSE.

Presentation on the openSuSE distribution

January 08th, 2007 - 06:00 pm ET by Mathieu D.

Appearing in March 1994, the SuSE distribution (for Software und System-Entwicklung in German, or System Development software in English) was based on SLackware and SLS. This Linux distribution hasn’t stopped evolving ever sincem especially with Red Hat and Debian becoming more commonly known both by companies and home users. In this time, the company SuSE has been purchased by Novell in 2003, with it being used to promote a partnership with IBM in 2005 and more recently with the signing of an agreement with Microsoft.

openSuSE
First appearing in August 2005, this is a community project whose contents are completely Open Source, but this doesn’t prevent it from having proprietary programs added. This free distribution will be looked at in this article.

SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop
Based on openSuSE, this version is designed for smaller enterprises that are looking for a more stable system that offers the best performance possible, with some options not being Open Source. You will need to spend between 70 and 100€ to purchase SLED, with the price varying depending on the media chosen (downloaded ISO image from the internet or DVD).

SuSE linux Enterprise Server
First released in October 2000, this version is oriented, as its name indicates, towards servers, with it being commercially released and integrating proprietary software. SLES is priced at around 350€ but varies depending on the support taken. A new version is released pretty much every 18 months but this can go out to about 2 years.

Throughout this article we will firstly look at how to install it. Then at the KDE and GNOME programs with the SuSE add ones; how to use these programs (office, multimedia and internet) and then finish by quickly comparing these with other distributions.

As you will have understood, this article will be looking at the “workstation” and not “server” version. The software presented here is available in standard openSuSE installations from the latest version available online, which is 10.2. When this is no longer the case, we will provide the additional links required so as to acquire these programs…
