Identification and cleaning with Processor Explorer

The myth of perfect information technology has never existed, especially in this day and age where ADSL connects our computers, exposing them to all forms of problems. If you notice something strange and not normal with Windows, then you may be infected with spyware or viruses. You will therefore need to search for and eliminate the problems with Process Explorer. A gem of a program that may require a small amount of knowledge to be able to use correctly.

The “Doctor Watson” method

This is a simple method that can work with mild malware programs. Install the following utilities:

  • Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Ad-Aware
  • CCleaner

  • Close all running applications and stop any services that are running in the background like P2P clients etc, generally programs that are located in the systray to the bottom right of the task bar.
  • Disable the Windows XP system restore service.
  • Verify that your antivirus is up to date and running on your system.
  • With Spybot or Ad-Aware perform a scan on the computer and if there are any positive results then save the results in a file and print it. Repair the exe or dll file names that were found as well as their locations in the system. This will be useful later.
  • Start CCleaner and clean up the registry so that any orphaned keys are deleted. A backup before the registry clean up is recommended.
  • Delete any old system restore points and reactivate the system.
  • Reboot Windows.
  • After performing all of these operations, you will need to watch your system for a while to see if any of these bugs appear again or if the system is clean.

You can read some more detailed explanations about these programs in this tutorial or even use Hijackthis.

If your PC starts to play up again then the only solution is to use the “Sherlock Holmes” method as the tools above are not always capable of fixing the problem.
