According to the latest data released by China's three largest mobile
operators, namely China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, the
number of total mobile subscribers for China has now exceeded one
billion. China Mobile leads the market with the greatest number of
subscribers, currently at 667.2 million as of March 2012. Of the one
billion mobile subscribers in China, approximately 15 percent of them
are 3G users. China could now be considered the largest smartphone
market. The Chinese 3G subscribers connect to a network based upon a
proprietary TD-SDMA standard.
Qualcomm has just recently introduced a wireless chipset, specifically
for the Chinese standard, and this will likely bring about growth for
the Chinese smartphone market. Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is
developing a strategy toward bringing its products to the U.S. market.
Huawei is hoping to follow the previous success enjoyed by others Asian
companies like Samsung, LG and HTC, which have all benefited from
introducing products into the U.S. market. The dominant players in
smartphones continue to be Samsung and Apple, in that order. Together
the two companies own a greater than 50 percent share of the worldwide
smartphone market. Competitors like Nokia, RIM and HTC trail far behind
the market leaders in terms of shipments and also profitability.
