We have all at one time or another accidentally deleted an important file, with the recycle bin saving us unless we have either emptied it or done “Shift + Del” in which case the deletion is final and it is too late to get it back! In reality, when a file is deleted, the operating system does not mark this file as deleted, it simply allocates this space as empty. This means that as long as you haven’t created or moved new files on the partition where the deleted files were then there is always a chance that you can still recover them.
There are a lot of programs that you can buy, or get for free that can recover these files, and I recommend that you use “Restoration”, a small program that is simple to use, which has the advantages of not needed to be installed, its free and light (the file is 200 kb, which allows you to store it on a diskette. This is practical when needing to help friends ;-) ).
Here is an example of how to restore a deleted file:
1.Download the Utility
Restoration 2.5.14
2.Unzip the file
You will find 4 files located inside:
- Restoration.exe (the program itself)
- Readme.txt (associated help file)
- DLL16.DLL (Necessary only for Windows 95/98/ME)
- DLL32.DLL (Necessary only for Windows 95/98/ME)
3.Using the utility
Double click on the Restoration.exe file to start the program:

A – Select a disk
B – Indicate a part of, or the whole name of the file that you want to restore
C – Click on the “Search Deleted Files” button to start
D – Select the Restore button
E – Click on the “Restore by copying” button
