Review D-Link Boxee Box

The D-Link Boxee Box is a multimedia box which is ideally connected to your television (via HDMI), providing the user with a range of multimedia play options and Internet services like news updates, weather reports, YouTube, MTV, ShoutCast, Twitter, FaceBook and all other social networks… it is even possible to subscribe to on demand video services. With the "cube" having multiple communication methods (Ethernet 10/100, Wi-Fi 802.11n) you can also stream music or HD videos from client networks or a DLNA peripheral, while it is also possible to surf the web on the integrated browser. This is an excellent box which provides a lot of the options that we are starting to see through the convergence of the Internet and TV.

Review D-Link Boxee Box

Two-in-one: Multimedia player + Internet Services
DSM-380_LThe Boxee Box is ideally aimed at users who have a HDTV (1080p, with HDMI port) that are looking to access Internet functions and who want to be able to benefit from two things: a complete multimedia player and a wide range of Internet services. When trying all of the services, playing video, audio and photos accessed locally (USB, memory card) or streaming (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) all worked without fault. There was no file format that the Boxee Box couldn’t decode. In addition to this, the browsing through the menus was easily done, with the reaction speeds being first class. The playing of HD video streams started without delay, with this being thanks to the onboard Intel Atom CE4100 processor.

boxee-box-remoteApps Library web applications for everyone
With the "Apps Library" module, the Boxee becomes a real Internet gateway allowing access to services via the large thumbnails (this display method is also available for your films and audio album covers), with pre-installed applications coming with the device. If the application that you want isn’t present though then you will have to install it, with such applications providing access to TV replay channels, news channels, weather forecasts, MLB, NHL, Pandora, Flickr, Facebook, Vimeo, Twitter and video on demand thanks to MUBI and Netflix. There is an impressive range of applications which can be downloaded, providing something for all tastes.

Browsing the Internet
At any time you can also use the Internet search function which will call on the integrated web browser paired with the Bing search engine. Entering the search text is done quickly thanks to the remote control and its QWERTY keyboard. Moving the mouse pointer with the directional arrows is a little slow though. We tried plugging a USB mouse into the box, but the peripheral is unfortunately not supported by t he DSM-380 (we can only hope that this feature will be included in a future update).
