Review Eset Smart Security 4.2: PC Security suite

About a year ago we reviewed the excellent Eset Smart Security 4 suite. Today, the updated version 4.2 is available, bringing with it some rather significant new features. The Eset suite has been released for Windows XP, Vista and Seven in both 32 and 64 bit versions, retouched with new functions while still keeping everything that was good about the previous releases. Containing an antivirus, antispyware, firewall with user profiles, an antispam integrated into the main email clients as well as complimentary tools (system updates, remote administration, graphical user interface), it seems like a good moment to (re)discover the Eset Smart Security 4.2 suite, which is one of the best products on the market for either home or professional use.

A free update of the analysis engine
esetintro2Eset Smart Security has been improved, with a free update to their 4.2 engine being made available to users (32-bit and 64-bit versions). Due to this update, we thought that it would be a good occasion to once again take a look at this Windows Security suite which includes improved antivirus protection, a personal firewall which has been updated so that multiple user profiles can be managed, an antispyware module and antispam. Clients registered with ESET are eligible to receive a free "update" to this version, which can be directly downloaded from the Eset website.

What are the new features?
As we will see in detail later in the article, there are quite a lot of significant changes! We mainly find a Windows automatic installation 2.0 kit (AIK) for Windows 7, faster HTTP stream analysis, the addition of an antispam which is compatible with the Thunderbird 3 email suite and Opera 10 software suite, the possibility of creating firewall user profiles, and a graphical interface which has been completely remodelled…

esetintro1Looking at the different modules in the suite
In our previous article about Eset Smart Security version 4.x, written about a year ago, we presented the different modules present in the suite. Since then, some improvements have been made with the antivirus and antispyware now using the ThreatSense engine providing reinforced real time protection (personal files, http and https web protections, email client (POP3/POP3S), as well as local, removable drive and network support), while the firewall has five filtering modes and user profiles. Finally, the complimentary tools can be configured to the advanced users needs (logs, system updates, scheduler and remote administration), while the user interface can be completely customised.
