Review Eset Smart Security 4.2: PC Security suite

About a year ago we reviewed the excellent Eset Smart Security 4 suite. Today, the updated version 4.2 is available, bringing with it some rather significant new features. The Eset suite has been released for Windows XP, Vista and Seven in both 32 and 64 bit versions, retouched with new functions while still keeping everything that was good about the previous releases. Containing an antivirus, antispyware, firewall with user profiles, an antispam integrated into the main email clients as well as complimentary tools (system updates, remote administration, graphical user interface), it seems like a good moment to (re)discover the Eset Smart Security 4.2 suite, which is one of the best products on the market for either home or professional use.

Antivirus and antispyware
Cleaning viruses from an infected system has been made a whole lot easier. The cleaning module now deletes most detected infiltrations transparently, without any intervention required from the user! The background analysis has also been improved with intelligent and custom scans being effective without reducing the systems performance. This new core is better optimised with the virus signature database updates being of a smaller size. Thanks to this, the "updates" are faster to download and install. To this we should add that the protection for the update files against damage has also been improved.

Incoming email analysis compatible with the main email clients
As we previously mentioned, numerous email clients are protected by the ESET security suite. Messages incoming to Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird 3 and Opera 10 will be scanned. Other minor additions made to the 4.2 core for antivirus and antispyware include direct access to the file systems allowing for faster scanning, the blocking of infected files and the optimisation of the Windows 7 security centre (Vista included).

The antispam...
An incoming message scoring system is also present. All incoming messages will now be assigned a score of between 0 (the message is not an unwanted message) to 100 (the message is spam) depending on different criteria. Depending on the results, the message will then be put into the Junk Mail folder or any other folder as set by the user. Numerous analysis methods are used, including Bayes which determines whether the mail is good based on a set of rules and verification of the message against a global database of signatures. Finally, it is possible to manually select the spam via an option which allows you to select or unselect messages identified as suspect or undesirable.
