Console games review
A simple add-on to Halo 3: DOES has over the last few months become a full release, a game that we could fully discover in the Microsoft offices. We were lucky enough to be able to finish the single player game as well as discover the Fire fight mode during our long gaming day.
Halo 3 ODST
- 1 - Short but intense
- 2 - A surprising opening
- 3 - A successful mix
They won’t hesitate following you as a group, or wait for reinforcements. During the driving phases, you can also feel this better cooperation which takes out the weaker targets before turning on the rest. The absence of Master Chief can clearly be noticed, with the game being less impressive then what we are used to.
Despite this, Halo 3: ODST is still an excellent shooting game naturally based on its predecessor. The graphics engine starts to look a little old, and we can clearly notice that it starts to reach its limits through the presence of imprecise textures. The soundtrack is good, with the majestic themes having been created by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori being perfectly adapted to the situation.
The baptism of fire mode will also guarantee fans with some long hours of entertainment in the same way as the Horde mode in Gears of War 2. This mode consists of you simply surviving wave after wave of enemies. The difficulty will continually increase over time, with the enemy becoming better armed and the cranes activated.
With ten different maps and only seven lives, this mission will be rather delicate. The four players will have to show their organization skills to have any chance of getting out. The first Halo 3 ODST disk will allow you to access the Halo: Reach beta version. As for the second disk, this contains the entire Halo 3 multi-player modes, including the additional maps. There is enough here to keep you entertained for hundreds of hours.
Halo 3: ODST has a different game format which is original and which requires you being careful when exploring. The presence of the open maps is interesting, along with the night/day alternative. This contributes to the player’s immersion and there are a lot of nice points that allow you to fully enjoy the adventure. This is clearly worth the detour as it is full of action and a touch of finesse. This is recommended to FPS and Halo fans.

GraphicsAt two years old, the graphics engine no longer has the strong points to rival the Unreal 3 engine and MT Framework 2 (Resident Evil 5, Lost Planet 2). Nevertheless, it still comes out correctly thanks to inspired artistic direction and ingenuity. They have found the right balance between optimization and fluidness.7.0/10

Music/soundBungie has never disappointed from a sounds point of view. This new release is no exception, presenting great richness in the sounds. The noises are of good quality in the same way as they voices which are very serious. The sound track is simply excellent, alternating between the dynamic and oppressive themes.8.0/10

GameplayThe game has a game play that is almost identical to Halo 3, which means that it is easy to get a handle on. Despite the easiness of the missions at night, we appreciate the opening of the missions and levels allowing all of the players to find a solution to neutralise the enemy.8.0/10

LifetimeHalo 3 ODST has a life span that is a little short. The single campaign can be finished in a half a dozen hours. The number considerably increases from the moment that you play in legend mode and you have to look for the audio recordings. The presence of the Baptism of fire mode will also increase the length of time spent in the game. With ten maps, this will really find its significance when taking on other humans.7.0/10

StorylineBungie hasn’t put an accent on the scenario and this clearly shows. The characters are far from being charismatic, as there are no faces or voices. The scenario writers have created soft links to Halo 2 and Halo 3. Fans will certainly be looking for a little more, with Halo 3: ODST only partially developing the licenses already well known scenario. The rest is coherent and interesting to live.7.0/10

Overall ScoreUnique, Halo 3: ODST isn’t here to replace the three other games in the series. It tries to fill them in through different aspects, partly through finesse and partly through brute force. This lovely mix has been surprisingly well put together and it is enjoyable to play. Strategists and Rambo’s will both certainly find what they are looking for. We have a very good FPS game, although it doesn’t come with a scenario worthy of a blockbuster film. It still comes through well with its intense fights and its good screen implementation.8.0/10
