64 to 256 GB of integrated flash storage on-board!
The new MacBook Air is one of the most highly anticipated laptop computers releases at the end of this year. Fans of the device have been waiting for its release since June 2009. Today, two models spread across four configurations are available, with 11" (1.06 kg) and 13" (1.32 kg) versions.
Besides its remarkable finesse, the device is promoted as the "thinnest portable in the world", as it comes with new generation MLC chipsets integrated into the motherboard with 64 to 256 GB of memory. Apple has therefore done way with the cumbersome 1.8” SSD hard drive. Unlike the previous generation MacBook Air, the lack of a traditional hard drive allows for the device to be thinner while also providing better performance, as the SSD technology has been improved..
Significant innovation? That’s for you to decide!
Other elements make the MacBook Air a concentration of various technologies which are continually advancing. Its aluminium shell has been cut from a single piece (unibody shell), its glass multi-touch trackpad is without buttons, two USB ports are now present compared to one previously, and the battery is more powerful providing up to 5 hours battery life in the 11" model and 7 hours on the de 13" model, while both provide 30 days battery life in standby! We will see that other elements have been improved, with the graphics chipset more powerful (Nvidia GeForce 320M), there is an SDXC port (although only on the 13" model), a 16/9 screen rather than 16/10 present on other models released in the range, etc.
Four MacBook Air configurations available
For the moment there are four MacBook Air releases on sale. For the 11" models, the Intel Core 2 Duo processors come in either 1.4 or 1.6 GHz, while on the 13" model, 1.86 to 2.13 GHz. The memory configurations are standard with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1067 MHz (4 GB maximum). All of the laptops come with 16/9 LED screens with a native resolution of 1 366 x 768 on the 11" models and 1 440 x 900 on the 13". The prices start at $999 for an 11" model with 64 GB storage, and run up to $1,599 for the 13" with 256 GB. For our review, we used the 11" model – reference "MCF506F/A", with the device delivered with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and the iLife'11 suite.
