Office Web Apps: Microsoft’s online office suite

Microsoft Office Web Apps is Microsoft’s online office solution to compete with Google Documents! Since its release in June 2010 it is now possible to create, share and even print your Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote documents from your Windows Live storage space. Each user will have 25 GB of storage space available to them which can be used on Windows and Mac OS X systems from anywhere in the world through a simple web browser.

Creating and importing from documents
After connecting to your Windows Live account you simply need to click on the Office section. When starting the creation of a new document, only the native formats are available (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX). To import office documents, and therefore continue the work on an existing document, click on "Add files" and then in the interactive zone drag and drop the files from your computer. The maximum file size is 50 MB per file. Fortunately, a large number of file formats are supported in this mode, with DOCX, DOC, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, RTF, TXT and PDF all compatible. In the add files zone, it is also possible to upload multiple documents at the same time (unlike the standard download page).

Workgroups and folders
So that you can easily find your working documents, like on your computer, groups and folders can be created. The groups are interesting and favour collaborative work within a team of other members or an association. Click on the Create a Group button and then enter the various fields by adding email addresses of the relevant contacts. A common email address will allow you to make group announcements, while everyone in the group will be able to contribute depending on the documents permissions. The creation of a new folder is done in the same way as File Explorer with sorting criteria available (sort by name, date, size, type), various displays (icons, details, thumbnails), changes made to the documents properties (delete, rename) and the searching of documents. It should therefore be very easy to find your online documents.

The possible document actions
With the help of your mouse, click on the "More" menu to access a diverse range of file options. With options to edit in the browser, download and open the files in your office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote), version history (access and undo successive changes made in the document) and the creation of a share are all available. It is even possible to refine the properties of an element (add a description, visualise the direct access web address). You should note that if you are working with MS Office, the "Download Centre module" will automatically synchronise the document between your desktop and Office Web Apps! The printing module currently only works with Word Web App, with this being the same one integrated into the PDF reader. This also only appears if a compatible PDF reader is installed on the machine - Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat Family, Foxit Reader or PDF Suite.
