Backup with or without wizards
The ShadowProtect Desktop Management Console allows the administrator to complete backups of their local machine by using the "Assistants" tab which displays all of the volumes in list format. The administrator can configure machines connected to their network to be displayed here so that they can get a "Network view" or "Administrative view". They can also benefit from a more detailed view via "Disk Structure ". In this second case, a detailed map of all drives will be present in the same way as the Windows 7 Drive manager. You simply need to select the drive or partitions that you want to back up and right click to select "Backup".

Internal drive, external drive, network location and DVD drive available for Backups
You simply need to state the location for your backup image, with the available choices being varied. You can select a local hard drive, a USB device, FireWire drive, network location or optical drive (CD/DVD/Blu-Ray). For better readability, double clicking on the default file name (_VOL) allows you to provide the backup with an easy to understand name (Windows7, Ubuntu, OSX…).

On demand or automatic backups
In manual mode, the Administrator can start their own backup by selecting "Now" in the scheduling window. For the first backup, the "Full" method will be used. For the following backups, the "Differential" option will be used (ranging from Day+1 to Day+6). To schedule your backups, you should select automatic tasks. There is an exhaustive range of options available, with "Later" (day and hour to start), "Weekly" (full or incremental from Sunday to Monday, with starting time and minutes between backups (15 mins minimum)), "Monthly" and "Continuous Incremental ".

Diverse compression methods and backup cutting
At this stage, it is possible to opt for a compression method (none, standard, high), select a password for the backup set (including file encryption) and cutting backup images into numerous files, with "splits" by variable predefined sizes which are adapted to a diverse range of media (640, 650, 700, 1 024, 2 048, 3 857, 4 589, 5 078, 9 180 MB) or the possibility or entering a maximum size per file. You then just have to wait for the task to complete. We will see later how the complimentary tools make the administrators task easier with a range of options available (notification window, e-mail sending in the event the task successfully completes and/or fails, backup history).
