Rumour: curved screen on the iPhone 5

Apple has apparently purchased equipment which will allow them to produce curved displays – perhaps on the future iPhone 5.

iPhone 4 01What is Apple planning on doing with their 200 to 300 machines specialised in glass cutting which are currently present on their assembly sites awaiting installation into production lines?

The site Digitimes, while remaining cautious, suggests that these could be used to introduce curved screens to the future iPhone 5. But screen manufacturers have already invested a lot in their production tools, with Apple in this case having financed the purchase of the special machines themselves.

An iPhone 5 with an exceptional screen?
Manufacturing details of these curved screens now need to be finalised before they can be mass produced. Apple is working with screen manufacturers, their cutting and the integration of the tactile technology so that they can have the best product available which conform to their high standards.

Digitimes has hypothesised that these curved screens could be destined for the future iPhone, while it could also be integrated into other products like the iPod. As for the iPhone in question, could this be the model planned for release at the end of the year, or the successor in 2012 which is supposed to be LTE compatible? We will have to wait and see…
