IE9 in Compatibility Mode?

I have IE9 on Win 7 and turned on Compatibility Mode as some page were loading slow. But, the pages still load slow, so, Compatibility Mode had no impact. What is the function of Compatibility Mode and when should it be used? Thanks charliec
