ubuntu 10.04

USB memory stick. click on "safely remove"
always I get "unable to stop drive"

1/ how can I get this to work?
2/ Does it matter anyway if you just unplug it?

Tried google and this seems to be a persistent problem but didn't find a
solution.

You have a file on the USB memory stick that is open or in use by some
app. Close it then try "safely remove" or "eject"

Sure, if you are editing, moving or whatever and you yank the stick out
before the changes are written to the stick you could corrupt the file.

Take care,
