A new Smartphone has been announced for release in the United States by Verizon Wireless: the Samsung Continuum. Running Android 2.1, the phone is set apart thanks to its second display under the control buttons.

Samsung Continuum 01Samsung has unveiled a new Android Smartphone to be distributed by carrier Verizon Wireless (CDMA). The Samsung Continuum runs Android 2.1 and comes with a 3.4" Super AMOLED display, although it also has a characteristic which sets it apart.

Under the tactile control buttons on the front, we find a second 1.8" Super AMOLED display which allows you to directly see notifications, SMS messages and other information from social networks.

This screen will be illuminated when the telephone is in the users hand thanks to the sensors on the sides and back. The Samsung Continuum benefits from the 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor (like the Samsung Galaxy S).

The Smartphone comes with an accelerometer and six axis gyroscope, WiFi connectivity with support of 802.11n, a microSDHC memory card port (8 GB card provided) and a 5 mega pixel camera on the back.

Engadget points out that the front is covered with a single 4" screen of which the bottom third is dedicated to the tactile buttons and the "second" screen. For the moment, only the Samsung applications have access, and therefore no third party applications, although Samsung are looking to develop and provide the corresponding API’s.

It should be noted that the Samsung Continuum calls on the Microsoft Bing search engine and Bing Maps. It will be sold for 200 dollars with a two year subscription.
