Samsung has finally unveiled their Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone which, like its predecessors, is seen as Android’s product of reference. This device will continue to put pressure on the iPhone and competing Android manufacturers.

After months of rumours, and an absence of any hard news at the MWC 2012 show, the South Korean manufacturer has finally unveiled their top of the line Samsung Galaxy S III during Samsung Unpacked 2012 which took place on the 3rd of May in London. This device takes over from Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, with both devices having sold millions of units.

Now smartphone leader (and mobile phones in general), Samsung wants to maintain their advantage with the Galaxy S line of products demonstrating the industries latest innovations to the general public.

Like Apple, Samsung has decided to use a particular event to unveil their device rather than during a technology show where their visibility would be diminished. The manufacturer also managed to mostly keep their product secret, leading to numerous rumours and speculation.

Finally, the Samsung Galaxy S III is a smartphone with rounded design (a little more than the Galaxy Nexus, also produced by Samsung) with a single button on the front (and two capacitive keys on each side) with a 4.8" Super AMOLED HD screen (with PenTile matrix, like the Galaxy Nexus) with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and Gorilla Glass 2 glass.

On-board we find, as expected, a 1.4 Exynos quad-core processor with a graphics processor that is 65% faster than the Samsung Galaxy S II’s Mali 400, with everything paired with 1 GB of RAM.

The device is 8.6 mm thick at most and weighs 133 g. On the back, we find an 8 megapixel camera lens (possible to take pictures with no latency time and a fast mode that takes 20 quick fire photos) and a 1.9 mega pixel camera lens on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S III will be available with various storage sizes (16, 32 or 64 GB) and a microSDHC port.

In terms of connectivity, the device comes with Wi-Fi (DLNA support and Wi-Fi Direct), Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and NFC module, as well as a MHL compatible micro USB port (Mobile High Definition Link) for HD video broadcasting.

The Samsung Galaxy S III comes with a 2100 mAh battery, HSPA+ compatibility (and 4G LTE in certain markets) running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, with the TouchWiz layer and applications dedicated to recognition/voice command. Its European launch is planned for the 29th of May (and in  june for US launch) in blue or white colours, while other colours are planned for later release.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is a top of the line device in a similar price bracket to the competing iPhone, with a starting price of 649 € for the 16 GB model.
