Screen flickers & other questions

Hello,

I installed yesterday Ubuntu and every 10 seconds there is for a short
moment a flicker on the screen. As Ubuntu's splash screen is broken (it
is horizontally and colored striped) I think that there is a mismatch in
the horizontal und vertical frequency. The resolution is 1024 x 768, it
is not possible to adjust it to a higher resolution. Under Win7 I have a
higher resolution. Is there a file where I could manually set the
resolution?

I would like to open files an directories by a single click rather than
having to do a double-click. Where can I find this adjustment?

Thanx in advance.

Best wishes

because under Windows7 you already have the video driver for your card
installed, but apparently in Ubuntu you currently do not. What video
card do you have, NVidia or ATI? Assuming this is 12.04 Click the Ubuntu
icon on the dash and type "additional drivers", launch it and activate
the video driver if it suggests one.
