Already condemned in the United States, Adam Guerbuez has now had his conviction confirmed in Canada. He has been ordered to pay Facebook a billion Canadian dollars for spamming.
At the end of 2008, a Californian court ordered Adam Guerbuez pay 873 million US dollars to Facebook covering damages and interest. Working from behind Atlantis Blue Capital, the Montreal Canada resident sent more than 4 million spam messages between March and April 2008 after having hacked Facebook user accounts.
This spam was mostly related to a miracle potion which enlarges a man’s penis. The man, who never turned up during proceedings, was hoping for more clemency in Canada. It appears this wasn’t the case as the Canadian Supreme Court in Québec followed the Californian judgement.
Adam Guerbuez will now have to pay more than a billion Canadian dollars, with the exchange rates from when the verdict was handed down to be used. This verdict doesn’t seem to have worried the man though, as the self proclaimed billion dollar man is playing up his new celebrity. Of course, Adam Guerbuez can never pay Facebook the amount demanded, declaring personal bankruptcy in August, with Facebook being just one of many after him.
The biggest sanction handed down to Adam Guerbuez though was probably... his ban on holding a Facebook account. With Adam Guerbuez’s Californian judgement, Facebook believed that this will be a "strong warning for anyone looking to abuse Facebook and their users".
