Speed up the loading of Windows desktop

May 07th, 2010 - 05:10 am ET by D. T.

Available through the task bar properties (see screen capture below), the Aero Peek function allows you to display the desktop and icons permanently by making open windows transparent. To do this, you simply need to place the mouse cursor on the vertical button to the very right of the task bar for a second. By making a small change in the registry, this action will happen almost instantaneously.

Aero Peek

Click on Windows Start button, enter “regedit” into the search field and press Enter.

Once in the registry, go to the following location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\

Select the “Advanced” key and right click in the right hand window, select “New” and “32 bit DWORD Value”.

Select the value and press F2 to rename it to “DesktopLivePreviewHoverTime”. Double click on this entry and enter the decimal value of 500. This value fixes the time that your mouse has to remain over the icon before reacting, in this case 500 milliseconds.
