AirWatch, a leading provider of enterprise-grade Smartphone and
Mobile Device Management (MDM) software, today announces The
Tasmanian Polytechnic, Tasmanian Academy and Skills Institute—a large,
public, multi-campus institution of continuing and adult education
located in the Australian state of Tasmania—has successfully installed
the AirWatch solution to secure, monitor, manage and support their
growing fleet of iPhones and iPads.
Each year, offering over 300 nationally recognized vocational
qualifications, the Tasmanian Polytechnic educated and trains over
50,000 local students from its three main campuses and various satellite
locations. The Polytechnic’s IT department used AirWatch to automate and
streamline the deployment of 100 iPhones and an influx of iPads for use
in student labs and classrooms. This initial tranche is part of a
broader, phased iPad deployment, with the Polytechnic expecting their
fleet of iPads to grow substantially over the next 12 to 24 months. IT
also uses AirWatch for the day-to-day management and support of the
institution’s 500 iPhones, which are used by administrators and
teachers. Like iPads, IT expects the number of iPhones users to increase
in the next several years.
The Polytechnic relies on AirWatch for its robust security
functionality, which ensures only authorized and compliant devices have
secured access to enterprise resources and accounts. AirWatch enables
and enforces encryption and passcode policies; it also prevents
unauthorized device use through enforced restrictions, such as
preventing access to the camera, YouTube and more. With the AirWatch
solution, the Polytechnic’s IT team can systematically audit devices for
compliance with corporate policies, settings, applications and more.
AirWatch authenticates users and devices through basic and directory
services-based authentication; and instantly configure policies,
settings, certificates and access to enterprise accounts over the air.
Additionally, the Polytechnic uses AirWatch’s Enterprise Application
Catalogue to create and maintain a secure library of their enterprise
applications as well as direct device users to iTunes for pre-approved
apps. With this functionality, IT can easily add, change, update or
delete any of their internal mobile apps stored on this secure
catalogue. The AirWatch Enterprise App Catalogue also provides the
Polytechnic’s IT team with the ability to track and report on which
applications users have downloaded as well as restrict app access, based
on the user’s profile. Only those iPhones and iPads under AirWatch’s
management can securely access the catalogue via the device user’s
provisioning profiles.
Daniel Le Lant, Tasmanian Polytechnic’s Senior Computer Systems Officer
stated, “With AirWatch, we now have centralized control over the devices
and how they are used, while also eliminating all manual aspects of
device management. AirWatch provides us with the control to push
internal apps out to the devices without the requirement of Apple’s App
Store. Now, this entire process is automated, saving our team a great
deal of time and effort.”
“Tasmanian Polytechnic is an early adopter of iOS devices in the
classroom, and we are thrilled AirWatch helps ensure the success of
these initiatives. With their growing fleet of iOS devices under
AirWatch management, their teachers and professors can more easily
leverage the iPad as a teaching tool with minimal IT support and
oversight. And with our newly established office in Melbourne, we are
now able to provide them with local support,” says Rob Roe, AirWatch’s
managing director, Australia.
