The firewall protects you from intrusions via the Internet when you are connected via either a cable or wireless. BitDefenders is bi-directional with its task being to control all applications and services connecting to the internet (browser, instant messenger, IRC, P2P client, FTP client or server, email client). Its second function is to make your computer invisible to hacker’s computers and/or “bots”. When initializing this module, you should make sure you create your own profile. So that you aren’t hidden from your local area network, manually change the settings and identify your network profile (Trusted network, then “My computer is connected to a trusted network (home, office, etc)”. This will prevent any traffic problems in the future.

Like with any firewall on the market, all possibilities of adding, deleting and changing rules are available. It is even possible to general numerous network zones in parallel like Ethernet 1, Ethernet 2… Internet users that use the WiFi protocol (802.11a, b, g) should also check the “Activate WiFi alerts” box in their firewall options. Once you are then connected, to a known or unknown network, a visual alert will notify you. Unlike other firewalls, we didn’t notice the presence of a profile backup and restore option. Its unfortunate, as once you have established rules, if you need to reinstall your system then you will have to edit everything once more. This said, you should be reassured that BitDefender has promised that this function will be added in the coming month, so we just need to be patient…
