The “dLAN Wireless extender Starter Kit” comes with two adaptors, with the first being a High Speed 85 Mbit/s Ethernet box, with the second being a box capable of running on Ethernet 85 Mbit/s or 54 Mbit WiFi. This is therefore a two in one kit. Compared to traditional PLC adaptors, the primary objective of this kit is to be able to take advantage of wireless Internet for all of your WiFi devices.
You can therefore connect a PC equipped with an 802.11g card, a console (Wii, Xbox), wireless media centre (Quartek Kiss…), a Freebox HD, PDA, Smartphone or Blackberry from anywhere in the house from an electricity point, benefiting from the power of t he wireless signal. You should remember that to be able to take advantage of PLC, you need to have a good quality electrical circuit in your residence, so that you are assured of a constant and stable speed. A range of 200 to 300 meters
This kit is sold for an average price of 200$ (see or price comparison). This is of course a fair amount of money, but it is a good alternative to having to run cables in the house if your Internet connections wireless signal is too weak. If you already have an Ethernet box, the WiFi alone is also available under the name "Devolo MicroLink dLAN WiFi" for about 135$ (see or price comparison). The range of the electricity network is 200 meters. If you chose the wireless connection, it can be extended to 300 meters!
The installation of the hardware
On the package, Devolo proudly advertises that it can be “installed in 1 minute”, which isn’t far from being the case! The manufacturer didn’t provide any documentation or software CD, but this isn’t really a problem as the installation is very instinctive! You will firstly need to connect the main adaptor to an electrical point on the wall. Next, connect the RJ45 cable that is provided to a free port on your internet connection (or router). Everything is then done!
L'installation logicielle
It is possible to install this on all operating systems. No matter if you have a Windows XP / Vista (32 or 64 bits) PC, a MAC (Mac OS X 10.4.10 minimum) or Linux distribution (Kernel 2.4 and 2.6, Suse, Debian, Ubuntu…) they are all compatible! You simply need to download the "dlanwlanextender-software" utility here.
