Eset Smart Security 5: effectively protecting your computer

We quietly tested Eset Smart Security 5 which has been officially available since the 19th of September. The new version of the ESET security suite still contains its proactive and Threatsense defence which has been reinforced against viruses and malicious files, comes with a personal firewall with various filters (automatic, custom, interactive...), and Web/email protection with the antispam. This year the product also comes with a parental control module and HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System), Eset Live Grid, the control of removable devices and a reworked graphics interface. This is a product to take a look at!

The addition of Parental Control

The new module integrated into the Eset Smart Security 5 suite, like most of its competing products, is parental control. This is activated by default but can be configured (Configuration, Parental Control). It limits web access and filters content for children and teenagers with the settings protected by password. The Windows user accounts which have previously been created will appear directly in interface and you simply need to determine the appropriate script to use (subjects of interest for children, entertainment, learning, etc.) and classify whether the web pages should be allowed or blocked. The parental access also logs all sites visited, although it can’t be remotely managed.

Monitoring activities

Numerous monitoring tools will help more advanced users see what activities are taking place on their machine. This is the case for Log Files which list all events in each of the modules (antispam logs, personal firewall, detected threats…), protection statistics with a graphic display in the form of a pie chart, the activity monitoring option (network and file system) and finally the network connections currently open on the PC.

Scheduler, Quarantine, ESET SysRescue, ESET SysInspector

When a threat is detected it is visible in the Quarantine tool (Date and time, object name, size, reason). You can submit this information for analysis at ESET’s laboratories with all questionable objects placed in quarantine (suspect files, false positives, other). By default, the internal scheduler looks after reoccurring maintenance tasks (automatic update, boot file verification, logs maintenance). It is possible to add additional tasks with the use of the wizard (search for the latest product version, on demand computer analysis, create a snapshot of the computers status…). ESET SysInspector inspects everything on the computer and takes into account system snapshots taken previously, while ESET SysRescue will allow you to create a backup CD which can boot in pre-OS mode and delete the most difficult threats.
