Test ESET Smart Security - NOD32

A big player in the PC security market with their reputation built on the NOD32 antivirus, ESET has taken the time at the beginning of 2008 to announce the new version 3.0 of NOD32. But a complete software suite is still missing dedicated to protecting your computer, so ESET has finally come to the party with ESET Smart Security. A dedicated security suite based on the powerful NOD32 v 3.0 engine, using the ThreatSense technology, as well as a firewall, anti-spyware and anti-spam. Is it worth it? The answer is in the article.

ESET Smart Security install To start, the installation of ESS (see the official site) poses no major problems, essentially asking you to activate the ThreatSense.net function.

This allows you to simply automatically update yourself from all new threats recognized b the ESET laboratories, although this can also be done manually if you wish. Eset Smart Security is capable of detecting abnormal or unknown behavior, through its proactive protection engine.

Such a preventative measure allows you to gain a considerable amount of time which is indispensable to developers so that they can implement the required counter measures to protect users as quickly as possible.

You should then define the protection level that you wish to apply. To do this, two possibilities are offered to you, with the first being based on a restrictive base of rules that you create. The second represents normal protection for everyday use.

To finish, you can, if you want, activate the application analysis and surveillance module. This will look out for “undesirables” which are not necessarily dangerous to your system. ESET judges certain “undesired” applications to help improve your systems performance.

In practice, ESS judged none of our applications as undesirable, and yet we had about fifty applications installed which covered pretty much everything (RSS readers, mail managers, office tools, codecs of all kinds, FTP client, Windows personalization/tuning, monitoring, torrent client, etc). It appears to be quite difficult then to judge this function then. We will need some more time to be able to provide constructive and clear comment on its reliability.
