Automatic update of the drivers
Before being able to take advantage of the operating system, we were asked to update the peripherals and programs via the “HP Update” program. All of the versions were updated except for the 802.1 b/g/n drivers as the system wasn’t able to install them. We went to the HP site and surprisingly there was no wireless driver available. We therefore had to manually install the drivers that were compatible, available at Ralink.

Configuring the sensitivity of the screen

To better appreciate the HP TouchSmart application, the program which manages the tactile screen, you will firstly have to configure its precision and the sensitivity of the screen. If you have a tactile phone or PDA, then you will already be familiar with this process.

Adapted multimedia applications

A series of multimedia applications and utilities allow you to get rid of the keyboard and mouse. You can control your slideshows, manage your agenda and add widgets… So as to watch your films you will have to go to the “My Videos” folder or to the Vista desktop. The customization of TouchSmart will allow you to display or hide certain icons.

The virtual keyboard comes to the rescue

Browsing the web with a finger is better adapted with the HP browser then with IE7 or Firefox. Once again, if you have decided to completely get rid of the keyboard and mouse, then you should know that the virtual Vista keyboard situated to the left hand side of the screen is available at all moments.

The tactile screen works 100% with all Vista programs
To play DivX content and other files, you will have to install the required codec packs. We have chosen to install the 64 bit K-Lite Code Pack. The tactile functions work with the menus and programs, with or without the use of HP SmartTouch. Windows Media Centre, as this 64 bit version of Windows Vista comes with large icons if you want, with it being adapted to all required uses! To increase the sensitivity of the tactile screen and to configure the clicks, think of running the “Pen and Input Devices” option from the control panel. A quick touch is the equivalent of a single click, a double touch is a double click, while a long touch is the same as right click… Everything can be configured to how you like if this doesn’t suit you!
