File sharing protocols
All the essential file sharing protocols are available with CIFS (Common Internet File System), designed essentially for Windows, NFS (Network File System) which is mainly for Linux and Unix, while AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) is popular with Mac.
There is also an FTP service. When this is active, you can choose your port (21 or another), the authentication mode (anonymous or user controlled), continuing from broken transfers, a range of passive ports and finally the complaisance address (ReadynasDuo for example), with transfer speeds of 12 Mbit/s.
The other protocols concern access via a browser in either http or https (secured) and the remote file synchronization protocol and rsync incremental backups (remote Synchronization) especially supported on Linux.
Service annoucements
Here, you will find the very popular Apple Bonjour service which works on both MAC OS X and Windows! This is an automatic local area network system which detects everything including printers, shared folders, web and FTP servers as well as iTunes, iPhoto and iChat users.
Below, UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) which doesn’t need presenting is available, which makes it easier to recognize compatible devices connected to the network.
