Emsisoft Anti-Malware Free (previously a-squared) is an excellent antispyware which brings with it a range of effective tools! You don’t benefit from real time protection in the free version, but when performing a scan of your system you can be assured that it will detect and eliminate all spyware, malicious programs, viruses, Trojan horses, worms and diallers. Once installed, Anti-Malware and its assistant will download about 100 MB of updates, containing 5 122 323 signatures for viruses, Trojans, spyware, worms, browser traces and anything else that can be of harm! As soon as the update process has completed you simply have to launch a scan of your PC (Clean PC Now button) to gain a quick status of your machines health. The interface looks a lot like an antivirus, providing it with the advantage of appearing simple to use while providing quick access to all functions.

In manual mode (without the assistant), you have a range of various scan options available to you. The quick scan looks through all programs that are currently running for traces of spyware; the intelligent scan looks more at Windows files, in detail scan passes over your entire hard drive for files while the custom scan can be configured to hunt down specific threats (active rootkits, malware, spyware, cookies, riskware…). Discovered threats are removed and placed under the Quarantine tab (source, behaviour, level, date…). For the other tools that are available, expert users may be interested in looking at the Settings. Scheduling scans, automatic updates and Anti-Malware community updates (information on threats provided from the internet including as a pop-up window, alert bulletins and reboot messages) are also possible.
