Review Samsung Galaxy Tab (GT-P1000): the anti iPad tactile tablet?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab (GT-P1000) figures among the first competing models released after the Apple iPad. This is a tactile tablet with a 7″ TFT-LCD WSVGA capacitive screen (1024 x 600) with multi-points paired with the Android Froyo 2.2 operating system and TouchWiz 3.0. From its initial release, within a month more than 600 000 units were shipped according to Samsung! This impressive figure can be explained by the Smartpad’s more complete functions when compared to the iPad. The GT-P1000 allows for diverse multimedia activities, Internet browsing in WiFi 802.11n (Flash Player 10.1) or in 3G+, with the device coming with Bluetooth 3.0, an A-GPS module, an accelerometer, two camera lenses (front and back) and even better - comes with two card slots. The first is for a SIM card, allowing mobile internet connectivity, while the second is for a microSDHC memory card… So what can you do with the Samsung Galaxy Tab? The answer can be found in this article!

An enormous Smartphone, and it’s rather nice!
Once you have inserted the SIM card, the tablet will restart and ask you which mobile carrier you use from the provided list. Managing your phone contacts and calls is done in the same way as on a basic Android telephone. All incoming and outgoing calls will use the stereo speakers unless you have connected the headset. You also have the possibility of starting video calls with this function having a lot of different settings for call transfer, answering management, automatic rejection, call signal, telephone ring tone, keyboard sound and vibrations, etc…

Quick browsing menus and playing multimedia content
The processor, a 1 GHz Cortex A8 allows you to quickly browse through the Android menus. The processor speed is the equivalent of that in the Galaxy S but its reactivity is a lot faster. This can be attributed to the PowerVR SGX540 graphics circuit. Playing videos is fluid and without problem. The multimedia formats and codec’s supported are exhaustive, and we had no problems playing films (H.263, H.264, MPEG4, WMV, DivX, Xvid, AVI), listening to music (MP3, AMR, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA) or viewing photo slideshows (BMP, PNG, GIF, JPEG). It was impossible though to connect our NAS to the device (DiskStation) for streaming via the AllShare application even through this program worked with the Galaxy S smartphone.

Internet browsing, Ebooks, Geolocalisation
The Internet browser natively supports Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which means that you can read most web sites. The user can have multiple windows open, can easily create favourites and make telephone calls. You can also install a beta version of Firefox, or Opera Mini if you wish, with this browser being a lot more complete. Reading electronic books is easy thanks to the well-lit screen, but the tablets weight will mean that you will probably prefer magazines instead of long text. A series of applications can be used for localisation: Google Maps, Street View, real time Traffic Info and a digital compass. Quite simply, it is quick and effective.
