Practical global solutions that make systems faster, more reliable and
longer lived than ever before are now available – and their results far
exceed the benefits of defrag
alone.
File fragmentation was originally developed early on in mainframe
computing as a method to better utilize expensive disk space when there
was not enough space to write a file contiguously; this was done by
breaking a file into pieces (fragments) when writing them to a drive.
Unfortunately, the resulting fragmentation created many well-known
performance and reliability issues. Defrag
was an innovative solution for this condition which “re-assembled” not
only the fragments into whole files but also consolidated free space
resulting in improved performance and reliability.
Now Diskeeper® performance software—developed by Diskeeper
Corporation, the global leader in performance and reliability
technology—has achieved the next phase in improved system performance by
incorporating many performance-enhancing features in its products.
Utilizing a technology called IntelliWrite® fragmentation
prevention, Diskeeper prevents up to 85 percent of fragmentation by
intelligently writing files without allowing them to fragment in the
first place: fragmentation is actually prevented before it even occurs.
As reported by Jan Lokna, of Sor-Trondelag County Authority in Norway, “Diskeeper
is doing an excellent job keeping our mission-critical servers running
at full speed. I had a quick peek at the IntelliWrite stats on our main
file server, and the number of eliminated fragments is measured in
millions! Since we installed Diskeeper, unscheduled downtime has been
kept to a minimum on those servers.”
Diskeeper also includes I-FAAST® technology, which
accelerates file access times by closely monitoring usage and
strategically organizing the most frequently used files for the fastest
possible access, typically resulting in up to 80 percent faster access
time.
“The initial feedback we're getting from our end users is that
performance improved after we implemented Diskeeper,” pointed out
Ayman Nimer, Technology Services Segment Manager, Al Faisaliah Medical
Systems, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “End users had been suffering from
slow access to databases and huge systems images. This is much better
lately due to using Diskeeper Enterprise Server. Our main goal for using
Diskeeper has been achieved and people are feeling the difference.”
Diskeeper Corporation’s proprietary InvisiTasking® technology
allows all Diskeeper tasks to be performed automatically, in the
background. Using only idle system resources, there is never a negative
performance impact on users or processes as a result of Diskeeper tasks.
And this also means there’s no scheduling or manual operation needed.
Network Administrator Aaron Cowell of Davis College in Toledo, Ohio,
USA, tells this story: “Diskeeper drastically improved our disk
performance and kept it constant with the automatic defragmentation
during idle time. Diskeeper not only helped with maintaining the disk
performance, but also made it possible for quick disaster recovery.
“We had an old file server that crashed and file backups were being
neglected, so we had to run file recovery on the RAID 5 array. Without
Diskeeper automatically defragging the drive and keeping all the pieces
of the files together, we would have lost 50% of the data; instead we
were able to recover 95% of the 300 GB of information.”
It’s a vast world and IT problems require effective, efficient global
solutions that are applicable anywhere and everywhere. Diskeeper
performance software provides these global solutions by going
above-and-beyond mere defrag
to make systems faster, more reliable, more energy-efficient and
longer-lived than ever before.
