Vestel, one of Europe’s largest TV manufacturers, will be showcasing
DRM-ready Connected TVs and hybrid set-top boxes, at the upcoming ANGA
Cable tradeshow. The result of close collaboration with Discretix, the
leading provider of field-proven content protection solutions, will see
the deployment of widely supported Microsoft® PlayReady® digital rights
management (DRM) technology across Vestel’s range of TVs and set-top
boxes. This major rollout of embedded DRM will be a catalyst for premium
video on demand (VOD) and over-the-top television (OTT-TV) services.
Moreover, these technologies significantly broaden the available range
of multimedia types and uses such as file downloads, content sharing and
much more.
At the forefront of content protection for more than a decade,
Discretix’ Multi-Scheme DRM Client has been widely adopted by TV, STB
and platform manufactures in Europe, Asia and the US. Discretix’
Multi-Scheme DRM Client delivers significant benefits to device
manufacturers including: short time-to-market, considerable R&D savings
and the ability to seamlessly support multiple updates to the operating
system. Moreover, the client’s increased security level and optimized
CPU utilization ensures the secure and efficient delivery of video on
demand to the end-user.
“Internet video will become a routine part of TV viewing very fast,”
said Paul Gray, Director Europe TV Research at DisplaySearch, “as
broadcasters add services through platforms such as Hbb.TV and set
makers are partnering with movie rental companies to build on-demand
services. However, rights holders will want to be reassured that their
property is protected – security functions are a critical part of the
ConnectedTV.”
“ConnectedTV marks a major inflection point in the entertainment
industry, and robust security is essential for this market to achieve
its potential,” said Hakan Kutlu, Deputy Director of Vestel Foreign
Trade. “We chose Discretix for the deployment of this key enabling
technology, due to the depth and breadth of their security expertise.”
Microsoft PlayReady technology is designed to enable digital
entertainment services across devices and software applications, with a
specific focus on meeting the needs of content owners, network
operators, service providers and device manufacturers. PlayReady

subscription, rental, pay-per-view, preview and super-distribution.
The Discretix implementation of Microsoft PlayReady provides the
essential elements required for a robust implementation on open
operating systems such as Android, MeeGo and Linux. These elements
enable device manufacturers and service providers to comply with the
security and robustness rules for PlayReady, adhering to the stringent
requirements set by major studios and content providers, as well as
secure content data paths. Security elements integrated in the DRM
client include: secure provisioning and revocation, enhanced
anti-rollback, secure data storage, optimized crypto and integration
