Use special characters in OpenOffice.org

July 30th, 2008 - 05:15 am ET by B. C.

Have you ever wanted to put an accent on a capital letter, use a mathematical symbol like alpha or gamma, or searched your keyboard for a character that isn’t present, instead choosing the one that best resembles the missing character.

In OpenOffice.org, the cases listed above are special characters, and these are very easily accessed. Here is how you can use them.

Click on the “Insert” menu, or open it by using the [ALT + I] combination and select “Special Characters…”.

Once you are in this dedicated section, you can search for those that interest you by searching through them all, or by quickly accessing them with the help of the categories menu that is situated at the top right. Once you have found your special character, you simply need to click on it and press the OK button.
