Which linux should I use for my new used laptop?

I was just given a Sony Vaio that's about ten years old and I want to
put a Linux on it but don't know which one I should choose so I am
asking here for advice.

There is probably no reason why you should not use the latest version 3.0.1
available from <http://kernel.ORG/>
