Orb 2.0 multimedia streaming software: test

With the use of a PC as a Media Centre/PC in our living rooms becoming more common, especially with the use of Intel’s ViiV and AMD’s “Live!” technologies, the digital house is now starting to become mobile with remote access to digital files stored on your PC now being possible. This is a good time to discover Orb 2.0!

Orb 2.0 multimedia streaming software: test

With more options, which is normal considering that project is a lot older and not limited to just the Wii, Orb has been developed by Orb networks and is multi-platform as it is capable of streaming your content on any device connected to the internet.

No software needs to be installed on the device that you want to use, and only the presence of an Internet browser is required. This makes the users job a lot simpler with you being able to easily transmit your photos, videos, music, and even consult your documents (very practical with a PDA) and RSS streams so that you can consult your favourite news sites without regularly having to visit them.

As a bonus, Orb also offers a few extra practical options. We will start with the OrbThis plug-in which offers the possibility of adding videos from websites to your list, like from YouTube for example. Once the corresponding plug-in for your browser has been downloaded and installed, you simply need to click on OrbThis to upload the video to your list of shred videos.

The additional VideoMail module allows you to send video emails, no matter their size (I hope though that you are not planning on sending a 1 GB files though), with the receivers being supplied a link that allows them to play the streaming file. It is also possible to access a webcam via the OrbSecure module that allows you to check out what is going on at home.

To finish, Orb is also capable of transmitting and recording TV programs from an Mpeg-2 TV Tuner card, no matter if it is internal or external. For those of you that don’t have a TV card, there is still the possibility of accessing close to 888 internet TV channels from all around the world (21 French channels).

Besides the possibility of watching TV channels or InternetTV, you can also record your TV shows.
